NETS - T

The two standards I would like to focus on from NETS-T are:

Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
a.advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.
b.address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.
c.promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.
d.develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools.
Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:
a.participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning.
b.exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others.
c.evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning.
d.contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community.
I think that both of these are essential.  I need to grow professionally so I can continue to keep my students educated on this ever changing digital world.  The standard that relates to citizenship is also so important especially in New Jersey as our Harrasment, Intimidation, and Bullying laws just changed.  We need to promote ethical and fair interactions on the computer, so students are not using the computer as a negative tool.

  1. Kelly,

I definitely agree with you on the importance of mastering the standard involving digital citizenship and responsibility. While the internet provides excellent opportunities, there are negatives with it was well. I have overheard several conversations by students about the bad things that they, their friends, and/or their classmates have posted. It is now important for us as educators to help tackle this issue and help students to be "productive citizens" in the digital world as well as the physical world.

What are your goals to help achieve mastery of these standards? Also, what processes will you engage yourself in to help meet such goals?

  2. Kelly,

I also set "Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility" standard as one of my goals. I think, the best way to reach this goal is using citations in our classes strictly and respecting the intellectual properties in digital medium strictly. Generally, we, as teachers, do not take care of the citations in the materials we use in classroom because of fair use policy. If we care about it, we will see that our students also will start to care about it.

  3. Kelly,

I agree with you that the digital media is becoming famous for its social networks instead of the benefits they have on education. Our students are first exposed to the social networking side of the technology so when they are introduced and taught to use the media in a different way, we are furthering their understanding of the technology. I agree that the media technology tools should be looked at as a positive tool and not a negative tool. I believe the two standards will allow you to further your knowledge as well as help students realize that citizenship is also displayed when using forms of media.

  4. To carry out my game plan I would absolutley need to show what an unreliable site looks like. I can do this by making a project and showing some reliable sites and unreliable sites and let my students see what they look like and what to look for. To develop professionally, I will continue to take classes because the technologically world is changing so rapidly.
